Sydney woman, 88, injured in robbery bid

Police are appealing for public help to identify a man who assaulted an elderly woman in Sydney's inner west two days ago.

The 88-year-old woman had left her home on Lion Street, Croydon and was walking towards the intersection of Liverpool Road about 4pm on Friday when a man pushed her to the ground.

He then dragged her to the side of a nearby house and tried to rob her. He also threw away her walking stick before leaving.

A passer-by heard the woman's cries about half an hour later and summoned assistance. She is in hospital in stable condition and awaiting surgery.

Her assailant has been described as being about 50 years old, with short hair and an olive complexion. He was last seen wearing a baggy, dark-coloured jacket and dark-coloured tracksuit pants.
