Man in custody over serious assault in Launceston

waverley assault

A 23-year-old man has been taken into custody following a serious assault in the Launceston suburb of Waverley.

A 48-year-old Prospect man was found on the side of road at the intersection of Naroo Street and the Tasman Highway, with what police call “horrific injuries”, on Wednesday morning.

Police say the man suffered fractured eye sockets, ribs, nose and jaw, and will require facial reconstruction surgery.

A unit in Allwinton Court in Launceston has been declared a crime scene.

Detectives and Tasmania Police Forensics personnel are conducting forensic examinations at the site.

Detective Inspector Philippa Burk said, the assault victim and alleged offender were known to each other.

She said officers involved in the investigation were also focusing on other suspects.

The victim remains in intensive care at the Launceston General Hospital and is still sedated.

“This has been a painstakingly, resource intensive, intricate and complex investigation. Since it has started a massive amount of work has been undertaken by my detectives at northern CIB, piecing together every possible bit of evidence,” Detective Inspector Philippa Burk said.

Police are still unable to speak to the victim.

“Obviously we haven’t been able to speak to the victim and get his account and so anything in relation to a motive is unfortunately still speculative at this time,” Ms Burk said.

A 1984 yellow single-cab Mazda utility belonging to the victim (pictured above) was recovered from a lake in Waverley on Wednesday.

Investigations are continuing.

“I would really commend the Launceston community and the Launceston public in relation to information that has been provided to us and information that is coming in,” Ms Burk said.

Anyone with information should contact Launceston CIB on 131 444 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com
