Abortion uncertainty

Uncertainty is claimed to surround abortion options in Tasmania on word that up to four surgical terminations are being performed weekly in the public system at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The government's official policy is that women are required to seek the procedure in the private system, costing 25 hundred dollars, and any done in the public scheme are for medical safety reasons.

But Labor's Sarah Lovell views it as evidence clinicians are in a dilemma created by hard-line conservatives in the Liberal Party.

"They (clinicians) have made this decision because they see it is completely unjust, at the moment, that Tasmanian women cannot access this procedure in the public health system, that is not a decision that clinicians should be left to make."
