A Launceston business has been recognised as a global leader in the zero-waste cosmetic market.

A new report in billionaire investor Warren Buffet's Business Wire listed 'Beauty and the Bees' as one of the top ten makers of shampoo bars in the world.

Founder Jill Saunders says the global zero-waste shampoo market is expected to reach almost half a billion US dollars by 2023, and their hard work has paid off.

"It's actually been a very, very hard road to be honest with you because the packaging we use is obviously twice the cost of cheap plastic, but of course the cost to the environment is massive and we're just not prepared to compromise," she said.

She argues Tasmanians recognise the importance of the zero-waste industry better than most others.

"You notice plastic waste here much more and so, as you can appreciate, there is a huge green core here which is the reason why I actually moved here 25 years ago because it was such a beautiful place and so unspoiled and also the ethos and ethics of people here are so different."

According to Business Wire, the global zero-waste cosmetic industry was estimated to be worth US $150 million in 2017, and is expected to grow by 22% annually over the next 5 years.
