Civilian tackles dangerous driver after high-speed inner-city police chase

Taspol

A high-speed police chase in inner-city Hobart today climaxed with a crash on one of the city's main streets.

A 31-year-old man from Chigwell is in custody following the incident.

Tasmania Police sighted a silver Subaru Impreza hatch, that was reported stolen in the early hours of Monday morning, just before midday today.

The Subaru driver allegedly evaded police, making an escape, before being seen driving dangerously around Kingston about half an hour later.

The man avoided police road spikes in the Kingston area, including the Southern Outlet, before making its way to Mount Nelson.

The driver was suspected to be a person wanted in relation to a number of crimes committed in recent weeks.

Tasmania Police deployed multiple units to the area, alongside a police helicopter due to the risk the dangerous driving was imposing on the public.

An hour after the original sighting, the helicopter located the Subaru on Mount Nelson Road, where a tyre spike was successful.

However, the man continued to drive with damaged tyres before turning the wrong way down Davey Street and driving against the flow of traffic before colliding with two cars.

The driver attempted to flee on foot, but was pursued by a civilian driver and police.

The civilian and police tackled the driver, before police took the man into custody.

Police would like to thank the public for their patience and assistance in this matter.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au.
