Tasmania is a step closer to having its own NBL team.
The country’s premier basketball competition will host its official preseason tournament the 'NBL Blitz' here in September.
The State Government has contributed $300,000 to bring the event here, which will feature all nine NBL teams in action.
"It's full teams, it's full squads, there's no resting. It's right before the start of our competition," Owner and businessman Larry Kestelman said at the announcement today.
He was also joined by Sports Minister and Acting Premier Jeremy Rockcliff and Aussie basketball legend Andrew Gaze.
Mr Kestelman says he’s still pushing for a Tasmanian team to be added to the NBL for the start of the 2020-2021 season but admits the Derwent Entertainment Centre is in need of serious upgrades.
He’s currently in negotiations with Glenorchy City Council to purchase the precinct.
"It's an exciting prospect and one we need Tasmanians to get around," Gaze said today.
They're encouraging Tasmanians to go to http://www.nbltas.com.au/ to reigister their interesting in bringing a team here.
The NBL blitz will have games in the north and south, and runs for 4 days from September 19th to the 22nd.
