Firebugs light up Hobart's eastern shore

Deliberately-lit fires kept emergency services busy in Greater Hobart overnight, with homes menaced on the eastern shore as high winds and warm temperatures fanned the flames.

Multiple blazes were lit on Thursday night at the Waverley Flora Park.

"TFS have requested the public not to enter the Waverley Park, Mornington as a number of trees have been damaged by fire and pose a serious risk to members of the public that may walk through the park," said the Fire Service in a statement.

"A tree safety inspection will be conducted this morning. Clarence City Council will advise when the park has re opened."

The firebug apparently struck again just after 2 on Friday morning; firefighters defended homes on Warren Court, Nankoor Crescent and McClements Street.

12 brigade units responded at the height of the fires.

Fast-moving fires were also lit on the Brooker Highway at Granton and in bushland on Tottenham Road at Gagebrook.

Police are yet to confirm whether there have been any arrests in relation to the fires or whether they're pursuing a specific line of enquiry.
