Tasmania's stubborn jobless rate

At an unchanged 5.8% for January, Tasmania's trend unemployment rate remains the third highest in the nation in the monthly ABS report on unemployment.

Only Queensland and South Australia have worse trend rates, the best state result continues to be New South Wales with unemployment at just 4.5%, Victoria is also strong at 5%.

Some positive signs still lie beneath the surface of Tasmania's figures such as participation rising again, an indicator that job hunters have growing belief in winning a position.

Also, the annual trend employment growth rate in this state is above its 20 year average.
