Commissioner continues in top job

Darren Hine

There's a pat on the back for the state's top cop after his handling of pandemic challenges.

Police Minister Mark Shelton has announced Darren Hine will serve as Commissioner for another two years, the Minister crediting his outstanding leadership, guidance, commitment and advice throughout the pandemic.

"COVID-19 has presented Tasmanians with some of the most challenging times we’ve ever experienced, and we recognise the efforts of all Tasmanians to bring COVID-19 under control and save many lives," he said.

"I would like to thank the Commissioner for his dedication to keeping Tasmanians safe, not only during the pandemic but throughout his decades of work in law enforcement and emergency management."

The Commissioner's been in the force for 40 years and in the top role for a decade, also taking on powerful state controller responsibilities at the height of Tasmania's emergency response this year.

Commissioner Hine was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in this year's Australia Day honours.
