The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging west to northwesterly gusts in excess of 110 kilometres an hour ramping up Tuesday evening.

The state's south, midlands, west, east and northeast are in the firing line along with the Bass Strait Islands.

Bushwalkers are being warned there'll be snow down to 900 metres in the west, south and central highlands on Wednesday.
