Ashley Youth Detention to close

Smaller centres rehabilitating juvenile offenders in the north and south will replace Tasmania's Ashley Youth Detention which is to close within 3 years.

Facing a week of difficult questions about Ashley's long list of wretched allegations of grave violations of inmates and staff, the Premier has decided its time is up.

Prisoners Legal Service Tasmania's Greg Barns has praised Peter Gutwein.

"He should be congratulated for moving swiftly with the revelations of the last couple of days, not only those but of course a serious number of abuse claims which have been lodged where people are seeking claims of compensation from the state government.

The Premier is proposing two new centres, that's sensible, one should be in Launceston, one should be in Hobart, there are world's best practice models for dealing with the very small number of young people who need some form of secure accomodation, they should be therapeutic."

Mayor of Meander Valley Council Wayne Johnston has expressed surprise at the closure decision given the amount of upgrades in progress at Ashley Detention Centre, while acknowledging the region's economy and employment will be affected.
