Alleged Risdon escapee collared

A 35-year-old man is back in custody after allegedly fleeing Risdon Prison on Thursday morning.

Police swarmed on Hobart's eastern shore, aided in the search for the man by the Westpac helicopter, after reports an inmate had absconded just after 9.

Officers caught up with the man on the East Derwent Highway near the Jordan River Bridge at Gagebrook, spiking a vehicle and bringing the chase to a halt.

No one was hurt and investigations are underway.

Anyone who saw a white Ford ranger ute driving eratically on the eastern shore is urged to contact police on 131 444.

It's likely to cast fresh scrutiny on the Liberals handling of prisons, the same day Labor went public with revelations five inmates were wrongly released early last year.
