We need to look at new ways to approach illicit drugs in Australia, according to Liberal Tasmanian Senator David Bushby.
Senator Bushby considers himself to be conservative when it comes to issues such as drugs, however a recent trip to Portugal has opened his eyes to new ways to approach the difficult subject.
Portugal decriminalised drugs in 2001, meaning that if you are caught with a small amount of an illicit substance, you are sent to rehabilitation or counselling rather than jail. Deaths caused by drugs have dropped dramatically since this policy was introduced.
Senator Bushby talks with Brian Carlton about whether this is a measure that Australia could adopt to help prevent drug-related deaths.
