An El Nino alert suggests that the next three months will see below average rainfall for Tasmania, particularly across the North and North-West.

An El Nino occurs when sea surface temperatures are warmer than average, which causes a shift in the atmospheric circulation. Whilst there is usually a 25% chance of an El Nino in any given year, the chance for one this spring currently sits at 70%.

Brian Carlton speaks to Alex Melitsis, Meterologist from the Bureau of Meterology, to find out what impact this may have on Tasmania.
