The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) says that a referendum to add Indigenous recognition to the Australian Constitution is not the way to do things.

Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister, Ken Wyatt, made the announcement earlier this week, committing to a referendum within three years. However there have been 44 national referendums in Australia’s history, with only eight of them passing. CEO of TAC, Heather Sculthorpe, says that they don’t want to run the risk of having a referendum fail.

Heather speaks to Rick Fontyn this morning about the idea for a referendum, saying that legislation would be a much better option. They also discuss NAIDOC Week this week and its importance.
