On Christmas Eve in Burnie in 1993, a 16 year old girl’s life was changed forever.

Leia – not her real name – was gang raped by several men that night, who told her they were going to kill her and take her to dig her own grave.

After years of coming to terms with her ordeal, 25 years later Leia decided she was ready to tell her story publicly. She was shocked when she realised that she was unable to put her name to her own story.

After Grace Tame’s success in the Supreme Court to put her name to sexual abuse story and the #LetHerSpeak campaign, it seems as though the State Government will look to change the laws gagging victims before the end of the year.

This morning, Leia bravely speaks out to tell her story, and why it’s so important that this law be changed.
