The Tasmanian health system is in crisis, our emergency departments are experiencing ambulance ramping and bed block, critical surgeries are being cancelled due to a lack of ICU beds, and health care staff are spread too thin.

AMA Tasmania spokesperson and Hobart GP Dr John Saul says these issues could be made better if more GPs were able to bulk bill, especially afterhours; however “the payment for bulkbilling afterhours…is atrocious.”

“GPs cannot make ends meet when they bulk bill,” John says.

Listen as Dr Saul joins Mike O’Loughlin on Tasmania Talks to discuss why local GPs can’t afford to bulk-bill, the impact it would have if they could, and why it’s crucial for the Health Department to sit down with the AMA urgently to go over their options.
